I was imagining what it would be like to be a paper doll, drawing all the outfits with artificial intelligence (AI) instead of using real materials. No actual trees, dyes, or factories were involved in the making of these clothes. The clothes existed only in my imagination as I drew them around my body.
The fashion industry is one of the most polluters on the planet, and its manufacturing processes require a lot of water. This waste ends up dumped into rivers and oceans, ultimately contributing to more than 10 percent of all carbon emissions just from the clothing industry each year. Scientists have estimated that globally, 35 percent of microplastic pollution in the world’s oceans comes from textiles, making textiles the largest single source of microplastic pollution in the world’s oceans.
The alternative would mean we don’t have to buy new clothes as often. We can recycle our old clothes and use the material to create new things. We can express ourselves in new ways with AI for designing clothes.
As we are at the beginning of a technological revolution, and we are envisioning new ways of living, using AI for designing our clothes could be so empowering. It could take away from the powerful fashion industries that dictate trends and fabricate an insatiable need to consume or be left feeling inadequate.
We don't need to look like supermodels. We don't need to fit into stereotypes, which are the product of trends that last just a season and are created by powerful fashion industries that dictate what you should wear and what you should look like.
We can create any outfit and always feel cool and beautiful. The infinite potential of fashion AI and our creativity will determine what's next!
